Through the efforts of the Secretary of the Navy George Bancroft, the Naval School was established without Congressional funding at a 10-acre Army post named Ft. Severn in Annapolis, Maryland, on October 10, 1845. Originally there were 50 midshipmen and 7 professors. The Naval School became the United States Naval Academy in 1850. In 1906, the first and second wings of Bancroft Hall were completed.

In the mid 1950’s, what would become the mainstay of American continental air defense for nearly 30 years first took flight. The plane is on display at the USAF Museum (also shown in the print) at Wright Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton. The museum was planned in 1922 and now cares for over 42,000 objects which tell the USAF story from 1907-1997.
